UNSCENTED

The Unscented Massage Wax has no essential oils in the formula, but in all other respects is exactly the same as the others in the range. The consistency, performance and viscosity is the same as the other Massage Waxes.

Unscented Massage Wax is popular with aromatherapists who love the Massage Wax, but choose to create their own blends for their clients rather than use our pre-blended massage waxes. It is easy to gently heat the unscented wax, stir in the essential oils of your choice, and let it cool where it will again move to the convenient semi-solid state. The wax melts at a similar temperature to chocolate.

It is also useful for therapists who don't want to use the blends as they prefer unscented mediums, and for schools and colleges who are teaching unqualified students and want to avoid essential oils in the teaching methodology.

However, our biggest demand for the Songbird Unscented Massage Wax is simply from those who prefer the massage waxes to other mediums, but don't want a scent in the treatment.

100% Natural Ingredients: Almond Oil, Olive Oil, Beeswax, Arnica Flower Extract, Natural Vitamin E

SPORTS

Sports Massage Wax is our most popular wax and is used by many therapists involved in Sports and Remedial Massage, as well as by many Physiotherapists, Osteopaths and sports professionals. It is one of the original waxes from New Zealand and has been used by professionals for more than 20 years. It is being used for massage work on players in Premiership football, international rugby, cricket, swimming, ice-hockey, softball, track athletics, rowing and on jockeys - and these are the ones we know about! It was also used at the last two Football World Cups and at the 2012 Olympics...

Another reason why therapists use the Sports blend, even those who are not practising Sports Massage, is that it has a lemony/leathery scent - making it neither herbal or floral and so excellent for use on male and female clients without the issue of a 'female' or 'male' scent.

The essential oils in this formula are Manuka (Leptospermum Scoperium) from the same plant as Manuka honey, and Lemon (Citrus limonum). We use a high quality Calendula Paste which we bring in from New Zealand. Hypericum (St Johns Wort) is also in Songbird Sports Massage Wax.

Manuka essential oil comes from New Zealand as well of course, and has a long history of use by the Maori people and is sometimes called the New Zealand Tea Tree Oil.

Songbird Sports Massage Wax is a blend which is an excellent pre and post event massage medium.

If you are looking for an even stronger grip, you could try the Fascial Release Wax, as it's similar in terms of ingredients, but has a stronger and tighter grip than Sports and is ideal for Fascial Release work and deep tissue work which needs a deeper, slower and more controlled performance.
100% Natural Ingredients: Almond Oil, Olive Oil, Beeswax, Essential Oil of Lemon, Essential Oil of Manuka, Natural Vitamin E, Arnica Flower Extract, Calendula Flower Extract, Hypericum Extract

WOMEN'S BLEND

Women's Blend is a balancing blend of essential oils which has proved very popular and is one of our biggest sellers.
The scent which is most likely to come to the fore when inhaling the blend is the Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) but this is balanced by the musky and regal Frankincense (Boswelli Carterii), which balances it out perfectly. It's this balance which makes Women's Blend really special.

Bergamot (Citrus Bergamia) has a citrusy aroma which is very pleasant and is one of the most uplifting of the essential oils and thus of great benefit in lifting the spirits.

The blend is meant to be balancing, and is synergistically created for this effect. All the essential oils used are associated with and are particularly relevant to women of all ages.

100% Natural Ingredients: Almond Oil, Olive Oil, Beeswax, Essential Oil of Frankincense, Essential Oil of Geranium, Essential Oil of Lavender, Essential Oil of Bergamot. Arnica Flower Extract, Natural Vitamin E

RELAXATION

Relaxation Massage wax has a particularly unusual scent, best described as a little like straw, a little like grass and a little like earth and vegetation. It is a two step scent - in that to get to the deeply relaxing and earthy combination that the essential oils give, you need to give yourself deeply to the scent and move through the first impressions to the second , very earthy core of the combination. This is the deepest kind of relaxation.

Vetivert (Vetiveria Zizanioides) is a scented grass native to India and Sri Lanka and is botanically related to Lemongrass and Citronella, and as these oils are astringent, it is very good oil for oily skin. It's name means Oil of Tranquility. Part of the earthy quality of the Relaxation Massage Wax comes from the Vetivert, which I personally find has a similarity to Sandalwood.

The grassy notes weave an intricate and delicate tune.
100% Natural Ingredients: Almond Oil, Olive Oil,  Beeswax, Essential Oil of Vetiver, Essential Oil of Ylang Ylang, Essential Oil of Petitgrain, Arnica Flower Extract, Natural Vitamin E

LAVENDER

Our Lavender Massage Wax is formulated with French Lavender Oil and is one of the most popular massage waxes. This is not surprising as it has been in popular use for a very long time and has been appreciated for its deep and calming scent through the ages. Whilst it is very well known for its scent, it never seems to go out of favour and is loved by men and women, making it a very versatile blend. It's cleansing properties also make it ideal for use as an all over massage wax and we now have the Lavender as a Reflexology Wax, as it is ideal for that purpose as well.

Our Lavender oil comes from the Drome, Vaucluse and Hautes Alpes region in France, it's high altitude and high quality!

100% Natural Ingredients: Almond Oil, Olive Oil,  Beeswax, Essential Oil of Lavender, Arnica Flower Extract, Natural Vitamin E

ORANGE SPICE

Orange Spice is a citrusy and fun-filled Massage Wax, particularly as it has a very jolly scent and people always comment that it makes them think of Christmas - probably because of the orange in mulled wine and cakes. No wonder then that sales of the Orange Spice always peak during the winter!

Songbird Orange Spice Massage Wax is a good all round massage wax, being liked by both men and women. It is used by a variety of therapists and and is particularly good for those in training, like dancers and athletes. The Nutmeg, Cardomum and Clove Oils add the spice to the formula and they create a gentle warming effect, making it a useful warming massage wax if you don't want to go to the full heat of the Warming and Easing Balm.

Orange Spice, probably becauseof the citrus nature of the essential oils, tends to be the softest massage wax, and some people prefer this in terms of spread during the massage. It is rich, luxuriant, spicy and of course full of citrus aromas.
100% Natural Ingredients: Almond Oil, Olive Oil, Beeswax,  Essential Oil of Orange, Essential Oil of Mandarin, Essential Oil of Grapefruit, Essential Oil of Cardomum, Essential Oil of Clove Bud, Essential Oil of Nutmeg, Arnica Flower Extract, Natural Vitamin E

ZEST

Zest Massage Wax is a light, gentle, refreshing and uplifting citrus massage wax containing Lime and Mandarin. We developed it with the Scottish Charity, Iris Cancer Partnership (SC041853), and a percentage of each tub sold will be donated to their valuable ongoing work of training complimentary therapists to work with cancer patients. As it is light on the essential oil, it falls well below the latest regulatory requirements for a 'leave on' product, making it suitable for pregnancy massage as well. We are sure you'll enjoy the subtle and zesty zing.
100% Natural Ingredients: Almond Oil, Olive Oil, Beeswax,  Essential Oil of Mandarin, Essential Oil of Lime, Natural Vitamin E

If you prefer a wax that comes in a pump dispenser you can try the Liquiwax which is a cross between a lotion and a  classic massage wax.

All songbird waxes are IFRA and EU 1223/2009 compliant and best of all, 100% Natural.

To wax or not to wax

Thought I'd try this as my Masssge Therapist uses it.....easy to use but only gave 4 stars as you suddenly stop gliding (which I find doesn't happen with oil). Will keep trying as I quite like it - haven't tried it on hair.....

Massage Table Size Guide

Massage tables comes in many different shapes and size. It can be confusing for you, the customer, to choose the right one but we are here to help!

A lot of customers call us up after they have bought the wrong size massage table elsewhere and we would like to help you avoid this mistake. It normally goes something like this; they like the look of a picture of a massage table on a website, they like the low price and then they check the carrying weight is ok. If the carrying weight fits their needs they click add to cart and the new massage table turns up at their doorstep in a few days. They unfortunately assume all massage tables are pretty much the same width and size.

The standard size of a massage table is 28 inches wide (71cms) and 73 inches (185cms) long. One of the reasons many "lightweight" budget massage tables are so cheap is because

  1.  They are smaller in size (normally around 61cms wide) and as such have less materials
  2. They are sold by specialist retailers who also sell anything else they can import and turn a profit on. As such they just buy the cheapest massage tables they can find in China. They go for smaller sizes as they are cheaper.

Make sure the massage table is the right size for you and your clients as the narrow massage tables at 61cms can be very uncomfortable for anyone who isn't petite and many clients cannot relax with their shoulders and arms unsupported.

The Width of the Massage Table:

Almost all therapists choose the standard 28 inch wide massage table. All our massage tables are the same length so it is only the width and shape our customers need to decide on.

Your massage table should be wide enough to cater for the wide variety of shapes and sizes of your clients. It needs to be wide enough to comfortably accommodate your treatment style, while being narrow enough to ensure you don’t have to strain your own back during treatments.

Each therapist's postural training and ability is different, so only you will know what massage table width you can handle. We have spoken to therapists who are five feet tall and get the wider 30 inch massage tables, and we speak to six foot therapists who have back problems and go for a 25 inch wide massage table. Everyone is different.

Generally speaking, if you are of smaller stature, you may do better with one of the narrower 25-inch massage tables. If you're quite tall, or are particularly keen to offer your clients a very spacious experience, a 30-inch massage table might be more suitable.

If you are in doubt, see if you can go into your local training college and see whether the massage tables there suit you. However, there is another way to get a feel for what will work of you don’t have access to a couch when you are deciding:

Cut out a piece of cardboard to the dimensions of both sizes you are deciding between. Put it on top of the kitchen table and lean over it. Visualise a client lying there, and see which width will suit you and your client best.

measuring the width of a massage table

Make sure you can get close enough to the table that you can pivot at the waist and have your shoulders squared to the clients hips, with your hands parallel to the clients' spine. Working in this position will ensure an injury-free career, so it's an important factor in your decision.

The most popular massage table widths are 28 and 30 inches. We sell 25-inch massage tables but you should really only choose this width if you are shorter in height and having a wider massage table might put your own back at risk over the course of your career.

You can also choose the 25-inch if you want to have the lightest massage table possible. By reducing the width of the massage table, the weight is also reduced. Now, this can mean a trade-off of some client comfort, but this trade is often worthwhile if you are a fully mobile therapist and use public transport frequently, where saving a kilogram or two will make a difference to you over time.

The Height Of the Massage Table

Nowadays, almost all portable massage tables come with height adjustable legs. Whichever massage table you choose should come with a large height range to accommodate you, and to cater for a broad range of therapies.

A common height range of massage tables is between 60 to 80cm, and this height range should cater for everyone. To check which height you need your massage table to be at follow this rule of thumb:

1. Stand up straight with your hands by your sides. Clench your fists.
2. Measure the distance between the floor and your knuckles
3. This distance should equal the height of your massage table.
4. Add a few inches in height to allow for the body of the patient on the massage table.

The height of a massage table is usually only adjusted when different therapists are using the same massage table, or if you have a client that is outside the average size you normally treat. So for example, if someone with a lot of body depth comes for a treatment after an average size person, you may need to adjust the height a notch or two.

You should be able to adjust the height of a massage table in just 2-3 minutes. Even though you mightn't adjust the height very often, the faster the better when you do have to!

There are 2 types of height adjustment mechanisms found on modern massage tables.

1) Twisting knobs (found only on wooden massage tables):

If you are working with a wooden massage table, it is better to have two knobs on each of the four legs for greater strength and reliability. When buying online, make sure to check how many knobs are on the legs. Cheap massage tables often only have one knob, and when you raise the legs to the highest heights they are less stable and have been known to snap.

2) Telescopic push-buttons (found only on aluminium massage tables):

The mechanism to adjust the height of an aluminium massage table is much the same as the push-button method on aluminium crutches. It only takes a few seconds to adjust each leg, and the mechanism is very reliable. Check out the video to see how it’s done.

Massage Table Shape:

The following are the different shapes of massage tables on the market.

1. Rectangle shaped with square corners

This is the traditional shape of a massage table and the one you are probably familiar with seeing. Our Combi-lite 3 in 1 and Affinity Portaflex are shaped like this.

2. Rectangle shaped with rounded corners

Same as no 1 above in every way except the corners are rounded. Does not affect function in any way, just a different design/look.

3. Hour glass shaped with gradual gradient

A fabulous massage table innovation in recent years, which solves a lot of the problems around choosing the correct width is the hourglass shaped massage table.

This style of massage table is wider at the ends, and tapers somewhat at the middle. This provide a spacious and comfortable experience for your client (as the shoulder and feet area are 30 inches wide) without compromising your own posture and health, as the middle of the couch where you lean over is a much narrower 26 inches wide.Having recently upgraded to one of these hourglass massage tables myself, I can vouch that my working days are much more comfortable, and many of my clients have commented on the extra comfort from the wider shoulder area.

4. Hour glass shaped with sharp gradient
Same as point above but instead of the it gradually going from wide to narrow, the massage table changes quickly from normal width to narrow width so people of very short stature can get in close.
5. Oval Shaped

The name says it all! There are no corners on the massage table. Therapists normally choose this for one of two reasons. They simply like the look of this massage table and it is aesthetically more pleasing in their treatment room and/or they find it easier to move around the massage table during the treatment without having to side step the corners. This is particularly handy when space is limited in your treatment room.
