Vitrectomy Surgery FAQ

What is a Vitrectomy?

A Vitrectomy is a surgical procedure to remove Vitreous material (the liquid like substance in your eye) that may be causing problems with your vision.

How long does the operation last?

A vitrectomy procedure can last between 45 minutes to several hours, depending on the work to the eye required.

Is the procedure painful?

During the procedure your doctor may give you local anesthesia so you are relaxed and feel no pain during the procedure. Alternatively, you may be placed under general anesthesia for the entire procedure. Please discuss with your doctor.

How long is the recovery process?

After the surgery you may feel some pain in your eye and your vision may be blurry for the proceeding few days. After this, the recovery period can be anywhere from 1-6 weeks.

Why does recovery require the prone position?

As part of the surgery, your doctor will add a small bubble of air and gas into your eye which acts as a recovery space. This bubble needs to reach the back of the eye where most of the surgical work will have taken place. Taking into consideration the laws of physiques, this bubble will naturally gravitate towards the back of the eye provided you are rested face down in prone position!

How long can I rent the recovery equipment for?

Each package is rented to the customer for three weeks starting from day of delivery. However, we understand everybody's recovery time is different and some may require longer than this. Should you feel in your third week that you will need the equipment for longer, simply get in touch and we can offer an extension of the rental period at a discounted rate.

If your recovery time is shorter than 21 days and you no longer have a requirement for the equipment, we would greatly appreciate if you contact us to arrange an earlier collection date as there may be another patient on our waiting list to receive the rental equipment! Please note the original price of rental equipment stands regardless of a shortened rental period.

Do I need to pay for shipping?

Shipping is free for all of our rental packages!

How do I send the equipment back to you?

When your recovery time is coming to an end and you know which day you will be finished using the equipment, get in touch and let us know. We will book a courier to come and collect the equipment from your address. A printer may be required to print collection labels.

Does it cost to send the equipment back?

No. We cover the cost of collection on your behalf :)

I'm hesitant about renting equipment that has already been used by someone else. Will it be noticeable that  the equipment has been used?

Absolutely not! All our equipment is inspected when returned to us. Any blemishes, stains or marks on our equipment renders it unusable and we remove it from our stock and replace it with new. Also, before being dispatched to a new customer every single piece of equipment is thoroughly cleaned and prepared using alcohol-free and chemical-free cleaners, with our cleaning process adhered to a standardized protocol.

Am I allowed smoke while using the equipment?

No. We operate a strict no smoking policy for all our equipment. Should you wish to smoke you will need to leave the equipment and smoke elsewhere. All equipment is inspected upon return and should any equipment smell of smoke we will need to charge a cleaning fee, as we will be unable to rent this equipment to other customers until this has been done. We thank you in advance for respecting this policy.
